Not scary, but very interesting - Call of the Sea is a puzzle friv game developer Friv2Online that takes two evenings to complete, but still manages to sink into your soul. What secrets the picturesque tropical island hides, we tell you in the review.
Nora Everhart, the wife of an archaeological scientist, is searching for her husband, who has disappeared. He has organized an expedition and sailed to a remote island in the Pacific Ocean to find a cure for his wife's mysterious illness. The place is notorious, but until then it skillfully hides its true nature, masking it behind stunning vistas.
The heroine discovers the group's camp and tracks leading deep into the island. Moving on, the girl finds notes and photos, from which she learns about the progress of the expedition: as it turns out, there are ruins of an ancient civilization lurking here, and the local atmosphere has a bad effect on aliens from the outside, causing visions and illnesses.
So the carefree mood is replaced by anxiety and expectation of something bad, and as Nora explores the island, she comes across the graves of those who were not destined to return from the journey. But curiosity and the desire to find her spouse will make the heroine go to the very end, to face her own fears and believe in the existence of other civilizations and worlds, incomprehensible to the human mind.
As you may have already guessed, Call of the Sea draws inspiration from Lovecraft (and, perhaps, Jules Verne) - although the works of the master of horror are not mentioned directly, it is easy to draw parallels. Nevertheless, the friv game doesn't cause horror, doesn't make you worry about Nora's life and doesn't scare you with chthonic monsters (well, except for a little bit). In some ways, it's even an enjoyable adventure, even if it's imbued with a sense of impending end.
If you like leisurely adventures, where moderately complex puzzles are combined with an interesting story - definitely, yes. By the way, Call of the Sea is now available for free for Xbox Game Pass owners.
